All US Presidential Candidates in 1952/1956 Elections: Part 1 - Democrat Party

Main Post:

(I thought this might be too much to post as a single post, so I decided to split it in half. This post will focus on the Democrat nominees for President in 1952, and showing what each 56' election would look like with a Democrat incumbent. A Republican post (also showing occupied/capitulated US leaders as a bonus) will be in another.) See Part 2 here.

Ever wondered who all the presidential candidates in the 1952/56 elections were? Well look no further! Here is a guide to all the candidates in the 1952 Presidential election (and their VPs), and the 1956 election. The VPs, who can change in game as ‘Ministry’ changes, only apply to the 1952 winners. Even if a 1952 winner is elected for the first time in 1956, the Ministry events do not fire.

If you see text in (Italics), I thought it’d be cool to give what the person’s office was at the time of the nomination. Though most are probably the same in TTL, I thought I’d be safe and just mark them all with italics, unless it is stated in game of course.

Intro - Starting Leader

In 1952, Harry S Truman is President. Ascending to the Presidency on the death of FDR in 1945, he is in the race to win the nomination for a chance at a second full term. Three others are challenging Truman for the title: Estes Kefauver, Adlai Stevenson, and Strom Thurmond. Democrats are trying to keep the blue wave going in presidential elections, hoping for a sixth consecutive win.

On the Republican side, the contenders for their party's nomination are: Interventionist Douglas MacArthur, isolationist Robert Taft, and progressives Thomas Dewey and Earl Warren. Republicans are trying to take back the White House for the first time since the election of 1929.

The player will get to choose who receives which nomination for each party, and who the winner will be in November when the election takes place. The winner will not take over automatically though, instead being inaugurated and becoming leader in January of the next year (aside from incumbents). In almost all cases, whoever wins the 1952 election will be the nominee for their party in the 1956 election. Some candidates will have their own small political focus tree path, but ones listed as a Moderate Democrat or an Establishment Republican share paths. Some will also get an agenda, a unique decision to each administration.

Note that at game start, the Republican party is listed as conservative (blue), and the Democratic party is listed as liberal (yellow). This can change depending on the type of candidate who wins. Thurmond for example is a conservative, so if elected the Democrats will become conservative (blue), and vice versa for the Republicans, becoming liberal (yellow). You can see this in each candidate’s party info.

Harry Truman

Truman

Let’s start with Harry S Truman, a social liberal moderate democrat. He is seeking a third term as President, having become President just under three months into his term as Vice-President in 1945. His VP, Alben W. Barkley, re-joins him on his ticket, having been elected with him in 1948.

(Both men were Senators before they (separately) become President and Vice-President, from the states of Missouri and Kentucky, respectively.)

He does not seem to have a Presidential Agenda decision tab as other winning candidates do.

1956 - After Truman

Once his four years are up, Truman decides not to run again, and the Democratic party needs a candidate. VP Barkley does not run (dying in 1956), so the nominees are William Averell Harriman, a fiscal conservative, (NY Governor), Estes Kefauver and Adlai Stevenson. These candidates are shared with a MacArthur, Dewey, and Warren reelection scenario.

The Republicans must decide on Earl Warren, George N. Craig, a market liberal (Governor of Indiana); or Charles Potter, also a market liberal (Senator from Michigan) for their nominee. These candidates are shared with a Kefauver, and Stevenson reelection scenario.

Estes Kefauver

Kefauver

Estes Kefauver (Senator from Tennessee) is a market liberal moderate democrat, whose agenda will focus on consumer regulations. His VP pick is Hubert Humphrey (Senator from Minnesota).

1956 - Kefauver

Kefauver will run unopposed for nomination, while keeping VP Humphrey. The Republicans must decide on Earl Warren, George N. Craig, or Charles Potter for their nominee.

Adlai Stevenson

Stevenson

Adlai Stevenson II (Governor of Illinois) is a market liberal moderate democrat, whose agenda will focus on corruption. His VP pick is John Sparkman. He was a key figure in the creation of the UN. Interestingly, his grandfather, and namesake, was the VP in Grover Cleveland’s second term.

(This is the same 1952 Democrat Presidential ticket as in OTL, loosing to Republican Dwight Eisenhower. Stevenson rain against Eisenhower again in 1956, but lost at an even greater margin but this time with Kefauver as his VP pick.)

1956 - After Stevenson

Stevenson will run unopposed for nomination, while keeping VP Sparkman. The Republicans must decide on Earl Warren, George N. Craig, or Charles Potter for their nominee.

Strom Thurmond

Thurmond

Strom Thurmond (Senator from South Carolina) is a traditionalist conservative Dixiecrat, and an arch supporter of states’ rights and segregation. His VP pick is Thomas Overton Brooks (Congressman from Louisiana). He may not see out his full term though, as scandal whispers throughout the country.

He does not seem to have a Presidential Agenda decision tab as other winning candidates do.

The scandal, true OTL but not revealed until after his death, speaks of his illegitimate black daughter. Being a staunch segregationist, this kills his reputation and career. He may resign, handing the Presidency over to VP Thomas Overton Brooks.

1956 - After Thurmond - No Resignation

If Thurmond sees out his four years, he will choose not to run again, setting the stage for the only two candidates, Republican Earl Warren and Democrat Hubert Humphrey.

1956 - After Thurmond - Resignation

If Thurmond resigned and Brooks is President, Brooks will choose to run for a full term of his own. He will face Hubert Humphrey for the Democrat nomination, and whoever gets the nomination will face Republican Earl Warren in November.

If Brooks were to win the November election as well, Northern Democrats, appalled that a segregationist has managed to win again, split from the (Southern) Democrats. They will form their own party, the Progressive Democrats. The Democratic party in the party screen will stay unchanged, but the Republican party will change to: Republican Party and Progressive Democrats (Social Liberals).

If you catch any mistakes please let me know so I can correct them. I go back and forth with editing/re-editing, writing/re-writing, assembling the images, etc... so I may have mixed one or two things up accidentally.

It was pretty nice to see a lot of familiar candidates, but also interesting to see some not so familiar ones. Devs certainly did their homework here! Just wait until you get to the next post, there's a few surprises in that one!

Finally, just want to say I don't think any candidate is as driven than Earl Warren. He is a possible Republican nominee in every election scenario where there is not a Republican incumbent? Besides himself as the incumbent of course. He really wants to become President lol.

Thank you!

Do the other ministers change with the newly elected president? I've seen Taft get elected, but the economy and foreign ministers seemed to still be liberals (while Hoover is immutable).

Massachusetts voted Democrat, that’s all we can do

Main Post:

All we can do is try to keep as many republicans out of power as possible

I think it'd be unfair to not ask the democratic party and the leadership what went wrong. When a party loses the senate, house, electoral vote, and popular vote, there's something more than who's on the presidential ticket. Question should be: why did the country reject that party? What wrong things/ doings led to their demise and how do those get fixed?

These two stats below are concerning for the dems:

Trump won Starr County TX, most Hispanic county in America at 97% by 16 points, per Ryan James Girdusky.

Last time it voted Republican was in 1892.

Donald Trump also won Anson County, North Carolina. The county is 40% Black, per Darvio Morrow.

Trump has become the second Republican to win this county since the 1870s.

There is nothing punk about US imperialism

Main Post:

Look, vote if you have to have to, but it’s fucking ridiculous seeing posts here praising America as “the leader of the free world” and saying it needs to be the world police. It’s utter cowardice seeing how people here downplay the genocide America is assisting in right now because it might hurt r/punk’s favorite politicians in the election. Where’s your fucking solidarity? I don’t see this bullshit happening in punk shows irl. In actual punk spaces that aren’t astroturfed to hell it’s Free Palestine, Fuck Trump, Fuck Biden, Fuck Harris, Fuck Netanyahu, Fuck Israel, Fuck America and Fuck the war machine.

I haven't seen any "Ra Ra america is the best" voting posts

I've seen a lot of "Hey casting a ballot to prevent the guy who wants to do kristallnacht from getting into office may be a good idea" though.
